Make a submission on changing the laws around alcohol in NZ

The issue of alcohol abuse has hit the headlines recently with the case of the King’s College boy who died after drinking a bottle of vodka. Drinking alcohol is itself not the problem. As the TV ad says, it’s the way we are drinking that is the problem.

The recent Law Commission enquiry made some firm recommendations to the government to help curb the abuse of alcohol in our society. Their recommendations included lowering the blood alcohol limit, raising the drinking age, reducing the number of outlets, and raising the tax on alcohol.

These recommendations are sound and sensible and backed up by strong public support. Unfortunately the government is not planning to implement any of them – at least not this year.

If you feel strongly that the government take more notice of the Law Commission’s recommendations, please write to your MP.

Guidelines on how to do this can be found at the Maxim Institute website.
